DAY 2 REPORT: Herrera pips Ponziani at Cremona as WorldWCR testing concludes

Friday, 4 April 2025 16:45 GMT

Herrera was the only rider to lap in the 1’40.5s on Day 2 as she finished two tenths clear of teammate Ponziani

Maria Herrera (Klint Forward Racing Team) topped the timesheets on Day 2 at the Cremona Circuit as the FIM Women’s Circuit Racing World Championship concluded its first action of 2025 in Italy. Last year’s runner-up Herrera pipped teammate Roberta Ponziani on the second day of action, with more lap record pace on display at the Italian venue which will host Round 2 of the 2025 WorldWCR campaign.

HERRERA LEADS NEILA: more lap record pace at Cremona

Like on Day 1, three riders went under the existing lap record at Cremona with Herrera leading the way, ahead of Ponziani in second. Herrera set a 1’40.503s in the final session of the day to claim P1 ahead of teammate Ponziani, with around two tenths between the pair, with the pair racking up 32 and 35 laps respectively. Day 1 pacesetter Beatriz Neila (Ampito Crescent Yamaha) claimed third place with a 1’40.783s which she set in the fourth session of Day 2, finishing just shy of three tenths down on Herrera.

HOWDEN SHINES IN ITALY: strong showing from the South African

Astrid Madrigal (Pons Italika Racing FIMLA) set a 1’41.33s in the second session to claim fourth place on Day 2 as she lapped eight tenths down on Herrera’s pace, although she had a three-tenths margin over Jessica Howden (Team Trasimeno) in an impressive P5. The South African posted a 1’41.611s to secure fifth place ahead of Pakita Ruiz (PR46+1 Racing Team) in sixth, with just 0.021s separating the two riders.

ROOKIE IMPRESSES: Lewis shows early promises

Sara Sanchez (Terra & Vita GRT Yamaha WorldWCR Team) took seventh place with a 1’41.634s, finishing ahead of rookie Avalon Lewis (Carl Cox Motorsports) in eighth; the New Zealander set a best time of 1’41.951s in the final session of the test and completed 43 laps, improving her time consistently throughout the day. Tayla Relph (Full Throttle Racing) finished two tenths away from Lewis while French rider Ornella Ongaro (511 Riders Experience) completed the top ten.

LITTLE TO SEPARATE THE FIELD: it’s close just outside the top ten…

Rookie Lucie Boudesseul (GMT94-YAMAHA) narrowly missed out on a spot in the top ten with a 1’42.373s, and she was a tenth clear of Lucy Michel (TSL-Racing) in 12th place. Rookie Natalia Rivera (Terra & Vita GRT Yamaha WorldWCR Team) was 0.011s back from German rider Michel ahead, with Isis Carreno (Pons Italika Racing FIMLA) 0.004s back as the field condensed on Day 2 of testing. Britain’s Chloe Jones (GR Motosport) completed the top 15 with a 1’42.879s. Michel completed the most laps of anyone on Day 2, with 52.

COMPLETING THE RUNNERS: potential gains to come?

Billee Fuller (Carl Cox Motorsports) claimed 16th, just a tenth ahead of Emily Bondi (ZELOS Trasimeno) in 17th and Mallory Dobbs (Diva Racing) in 18th. Jamie Hanks-Elliott (Hanks Racing) secured 19th with Chun Mei Liu (WT Team Taiwan) rounding out the top 20. Sonya Lloyd (Team Trasimeno), Beatrice Barbera (Team GP3 AD11) and Madalena Simoes (FB Racing Team) completed the field on Day 2; Barbera and Simoes both crashed in the second session of the day at Turn 6.
